The Story of Raffir

A new product has appeared in our online store—the Predatory, featuring an N690 steel blade and a handle made of Raffir, which is an abbreviation of the Danish word “to refine.” Behind the creation of this material lies an interesting story of two friends—originally enthusiastic amateur knife makers.

In 1998, when two Danish boys—Jacob Schou Madsen and Michael Sourt Mouritson—were 13 years old, their main hobby was making knives as a hobby. They devoted all their free time to it. When they came of age in 2003, they founded a company into which they invested all their money and savings. Despite their parents’ concerns, they took the money and traveled to Russia, where they paid in advance for fossilized mammoth tusks. When the tusks actually arrived, they cut them up and sold them to other knife makers. They then invested part of the money in purchasing more tusks, while the rest went toward developing their own wood stabilization technology.

By the end of 2003, they had already launched their first line of stabilized wood, which they produced in Jacob’s parents’ garage. Years of further development followed, during which they used modern technologies to bond fragile natural materials—which would normally be unsuitable for knife handles—with various resins and binders. This is how Raffir was gradually developed. The company was eventually named after it in 2014, and Raffir became its main product. What started as a garage-based business has grown into a large factory, from which Raffir is shipped all over the world.

The handles of our new Predator knives are made from a material called Raffir Composites. It consists of plant fibers, which give it its light color, patterns, and textures. It is supplemented with brass, bronze, and aluminum, making the material machinable and corrosion-resistant. All of these components are then bound together by polymer resins that add contrast and 3D depth. The result is a beautiful, semi-translucent, high-contrast material—Raffir.

The Raffir knife handle is durable and comfortable to hold. Its ergonomic shape, combined with the other components, highlights its beautiful and sophisticated design.

You can order Predator Raffir knives in red, green, and blue.
