Antler Handles

The quality and aesthetics of a knife are determined not only by its blade, but also by its handle. One of the traditional materials used for handles is antler. Although crafting antler into handles is not easy and requires craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, knives with such handles remain popular for their aesthetic appeal. That is why Mikov uses antler in a wide range of its products

Of course, the most popular knives with antler handles are hunting knives—specifically the Fixir, Hunter, and Hubert folding knives, as well as specialized deer-hunting daggers. This makes sense, as antlers are a natural part of hunters’ culture. However, antler is also popular on what is likely Mikov’s most famous knife worldwide: the Predator.

How does Mikov manufacture antler handles? Naturally, it employs traditional methods that have been tried and tested over centuries. Well-dried antler is first cut into appropriate pieces to match the required knife design. Any necessary shaping is then done using heat. The semi-finished piece prepared in this way is further individually adjusted by sanding and polishing to fit the specific knife handle, ensuring that the knife fits perfectly in the hand and that nothing gets in the way or causes discomfort when gripping it.

Every knife with an antler handle is, in fact, a one-of-a-kind original that feels very pleasant to the touch. Another major advantage is that antler provides natural thermal insulation, so the knife handle does not get cold as quickly—especially when working in winter—making the knife more comfortable to use.

To ensure that knives with antler handles serve their owners well and for a long time, they must also be properly cared for. Although maintenance isn’t particularly demanding, Mikov recommends following some basic rules. First and foremost, the knife should be cleaned after each use. All you need is lukewarm water, a mild detergent, a soft cloth, a sponge, or a brush. Under no circumstances should knives with antler handles be washed with harsh cleaning agents or in dishwashers.

The knife should be stored out of direct sunlight; avoid exposing it to high temperatures during use; and occasionally coat the handle with cooking oil or a product designed for treating hunting trophies. The knife should be stored in a natural environment that is not too dry, to prevent the handles from cracking.
