The summer break is halfway over; for many of us, vacation is already over, while others are still getting ready to go. And an active vacation spent in nature is often a time when we really put our outdoor and hunting knivesto good use . Mikov offers a wide range of products in these knife categories. However, to ensure our knives last as long as possible, we should take a few simple steps upon returning home.
Even though we naturally cleaned the knife after each use while on vacation, it’s a good idea to give it a thorough cleaning upon our return using a soft brush and warm soapy water. For knives we used to handle food, we can also use a mild disinfectant.
Cleaning must, of course, be followed by thorough drying. It’s especially important to dry the joints and moving parts, where moisture can get trapped. To dry the knife, you can use a dry, soft cloth or let it air dry. After drying, apply a thin layer of oil to the blade and the knife’s moving parts. Mineral oil or a special knife oil is ideal for this purpose, as it protects the blade from corrosion and keeps the moving parts functioning properly. If the knife has a wooden handle (Mikov uses these on its Hikerknives ) or an antler handle (typically found on Mikov’s hunting knives), you can lightly treat it with the appropriate oil to keep it hydrated and prevent cracking.
Store the knives in a dry, well-ventilated place to prevent corrosion. Avoid damp areas such as basements or bathrooms. If the knife comes with a sheath, use it for storage as well; it protects the knife from dust and physical damage.
If you plan to store your Mikov Predatorswitchblade for an extended period , it’s a good idea to leave it in the open position to prevent long-term strain on the spring that powers the opening mechanism.
It’s a good idea to check the knife after a few weeks. You may have overlooked a spot while cleaning and maintaining it, and a rust spot could have appeared on the blade. It’s always easier to address this issue early on.
