Blade Texturing - Jimping

Knife blades are not merely sharpened pieces of metal. When designing them, designers carefully consider and calculate the shape so that it best suits the knife’s purpose. And they give just as much thought to the other features the blade should include. We recently wrote about the choil, but it is not the only feature found on knife blades. Perhaps an even more commonly used feature than the choil is “jimping,” which refers to the textured ridges along the spine of the blade.

Although jimping may seem inconspicuous, it can significantly affect the ergonomics, safety, and control when using a knife. It began to gain popularity as a trend in the 1970s, particularly among tactical and military knives. It is therefore no surprise that Mikov incorporated jimping into its legendary UTONmilitary knife , which was being developed at that time. So what advantages does jimping offer a knife?

One of the main reasons the blade spine is textured is to improve grip. The texture provides better support for the thumb or other fingers, which often rest against the blade spine when working with the knife. This is especially important in situations that require precision and delicacy, but it also allows you to apply more force without the risk of the knife slipping out of your hand. The textured back ensures that the thumb maintains a firm grip even when the knife handle is wet, greasy, or otherwise slippery. This is important not only for soldiers but also for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. That’s why Mikov has textured the spine of the blade on knives such as the Diverdiving knife , the Taurus tank knife , and the Patron outdoor knife .

Although the main reasons for jimping are functionality and safety, the aesthetic aspect cannot be overlooked. Mikov places great emphasis on design, which is why the jimping on the blade backs is done in a way that gives the knives a unique look. Typical examples include the military knives from the War Veteran Project: the Storm, Repetitor, and Golak.

So, if you’re choosing a new knife, one of your selection criteria should be how useful and practical blade texturing might be for you. Its advantages are, in any case, undeniable and unmistakable.
