Rather than a real historical figure, Valentine is a legend—but that doesn’t make the story any less interesting. Legend has it that a Roman emperor once forbade young men from getting married. The reason was quite prosaic: after getting married, none of them wanted to fight in the army anymore. But Rome needed a strong army.
Despite the emperor’s ban, the young and handsome Bishop Valentine continued to marry young couples. In secret, of course. And, of course, it came to light. In ancient Rome, with its love of gossip and rumors, nothing could be kept secret. In that respect, Rome was very much like our present day.
Bishop Valentine ended up in prison and was sentenced to death. But while in prison, he himself eventually fell in love with the jailer’s beautiful daughter. And on the eve of his execution, he sent her a note declaring his love.
And as the figures mentioned at the beginning show, this inspired many and caught on.
