Elipt - A Few Notes on Knife Development

The journey of the modern Elipt folding knife from its first prototype to perfection was not an easy one. Find out why our engineering team had to redesign it from scratch and how it ultimately became an elegant and reliable tool that offers top-of-the-line features at a fair price.

When Mikov unveiled the prototype of the Elipt knife at the 2017 IWA trade show in Nuremberg, it sparked a huge wave of interest. Our product line had been missing a folding knife with such a modern and elegant design.

However, it was still just a prototype. And since we must first thoroughly test and subject all the knives we bring to market to stress tests, we tested the Elipt as well. During testing, certain weaknesses in the knife became apparent—weaknesses that would prevent the knife from serving its owners reliably over the long term.

The new leadership of our technical department tried to resolve the entire issue, but since the flaw lay directly in the knife’s very construction, the decision was made to start from scratch and do it right.

The new Elipt is thus both an elegant and practical knife. It is also a knife designed to offer the best possible features at a fair price. From the material of the down-point blade—D2 steel with a hardness of 60–63 HRc—to its ball-bearing mounting, to the anodized duralumin handle, the liner lock mechanism, and the steel liners. In fact, you can view the full technical specifications here.

We believe that the Elipt will rightfully take its place alongside our other successful knives, such as the Predator, UTON, Pocket, and List.
