“We view the fact that our Rybička knife is a regional product of Bohemian Switzerland not only as a marketing brand, but above all as a commitment to our region. And so we’re delighted that, ahead of this year’s Christmas, we were able to launch its new series, named Salmie, which isn’t silver but salmon-colored,” said Karel Ježek, director and owner of Mikov
Salmon is an interesting fish. Although it lives in the sea, it also needs freshwater rivers to reproduce. However, due to the construction of dams and other obstacles to their migration, this has become increasingly difficult. In the Czech Republic, the only place where salmon regularly return—albeit in small numbers—is the small Kamenice River.
Sales of Salmia will help increase the salmon population in the Kamenice. With the proceeds from its sale, the Czech Switzerland National Park Administration will purchase salmon eggs, which it will release into the Kamenice and its tributaries. These will hatch into young salmon, which will then return to the Czech Republic.
“This may not be a groundbreaking project that will change the world or our region. But it can make it a little better and richer. And that’s why we’re glad that, as a company that belongs here, we’re supporting it,” concluded Karel Ježek.
Mikov is the largest cutlery company in the Czech Republic, continuing a tradition of small-scale industrial and cutlery production in Mikulášovice that dates back more than 300 years. It currently employs more than 70 people from Mikulášovice and the surrounding area.
